Summer days are a great time to enjoy hiking. And hiking is more enjoyable for kids (and with kids!) if they are involved in the planning and are willing to share their new-found knowledge of flora, fauna, and topography. Kids also enjoy selecting and packing their gear and setting up rest stops. This program will be a great way for kids to unplug from their devices and to develop their awareness of and enjoyment of the great outdoors. Using Roxbury Latin’s large on-campus forest, students will also learn to read maps, use a compass, tie knots, set up a tent, cook a meal, and prepare campfire skits.
Chris Heaton teaches history and coaches cross country at The Roxbury Latin School, where he is also the school’s librarian and archivist. Father of three young children, Chris is also a long-time Boy Scouts leader, leading his son’s local troop and spending lots of time outdoors.
